Multi-Physics Applications for Oil Exploration and Field Development (INT700)

Brief description:

Improved exploration success, reservoir management and production optimization require accurate characterization of the sub-surface. Advances in geophysical data acquisition and interpretation have led to significant improvements in the remote imaging of earth structure and properties. However, when only a single data type is considered, ambiguities in the interpretation can remain. For instance, for a low API, high viscous oil reservoir, seismic can provide structural information about the reservoir but may not be able to unambiguously discriminate heavy oil from water. On the other hand, marine controlled source electromagnetic (CSEM) can utilize resistivity to discriminate heavy oil from water, but with limited structural configuration.  However, when both seismic and CSEM are combined, they can complement each other, and in this example, the seismic will provide the structures, while the CSEM will provide fluid discrimination. The well-log data will help calibrate the two surface geophysical data sets.  This course will illustrate approaches to integrating these complementary sources of information to exploit the strengths of each, with the goal of providing estimates of sub-surface structure and properties with greater confidence than from any single data type.
